MONDRIAN GARDEN

In the spirit of Mondrian’s iconic grid, strong linear retaining walls are composed to negotiate the steep slope, organizing the site into a sequence of planted terraces. These terraces not only soften the grade transition but also introduce rhythm, structure, and seasonal variation, while visually scaling the home down toward the street. A layered planting strategy introduces trees that mediate between curb and roofline, balancing vertical accents with the horizontal geometry of the stone walls. A direct stone path establishes a clear connection from the street to the front door, while branching stepping-stone paths extend the grid outward to the driveway and side gardens.
In the Rear Garden, the design embraces lightness and elevation, drawing from Mondrian’s interplay of proportion and balance. Spaces unfold across varied levels, where clean lines and minimal materials frame moments of openness. Plantings soften the geometry, weaving natural textures through the ordered framework. A floating deck extends the sunroom seamlessly outdoors, dissolving the threshold between house and garden. Water features reinforce the composition: a raised runnel provides a tranquil soundscape, while paired water boxes, inlaid with pavers, act as reflecting planes that mirror the landscape grid. A simple arbor establishes a vertical counterpoint and canopy for the terrace, while an adjacent play lawn anchors the composition with a flexible open space for gathering and activity.
