The Making of 'The Mosaic'

Like most great ideas, many iterations come before the final grand result. With this residential property in Chevy Chase, we had the opportunity to redesign our clients property completely. The three iterations below along with the last were presented to the client. Each planting plan was approached with the idea of combining the two adjacent properties to create a respite from the crowded and noisy urban lifestyle.

Each design features a mired of elements combined to create interest in every facet of the landscape. From water features to paving, to pocket gardens and seating nooks, every square inch of this property was considered in planning this garden retreat.

The detailing of each element of this project is what truly makes it sing. At the three main terraces, within the travertine paving lie custom granite insets in the shapes of hummingbirds and swallows. Akin to the shadows cast by flocks flying above. The entertaining terrace boasts a large, custom mahogany and steel arbor with integrated lighting, fans and fountain controls for the adjacent custom granite block fountain. The fountain spills beautifully into a riverstone basin, creating the calming sound of trickling water. A more intimate terrace located amongst two large existing Oak trees is furnished with a fire pit and elegant lounge furniture that creates a more personal space for the family to gather and spend time. To the far south, an allée was created using large, reclaimed granite curbing stones amongst Elm trees that creates a welcoming approach to the rear yard and with the lush garden bellow, provides a scenic view from the interior of the home.

At the main residence, an expanded driveway was created to support a regulation pickleball court. The driveway contains integrated heating to melt snow and ice in the winter and allow for 4 season practicing and playing on the court. Adjacent the driveway is the final terrace nestled between a massive Tulip Poplar and Black Gum tree. This area provides a shady respite while using the court and is furnished with a custom, retro-fitted vase fountain the bubbles amongst the garden.

Beyond the detailing and installation of all the aforementioned elements, C+RLA also selected all of the exterior furnishings, including over 40 containers which are planted 4 times per year with annual and perennial plant material that are evocative of the seasons.

C+RLA maintains the garden after completion, overseeing all trades to ensure the life of the garden is as intended. This respite in the heart of Chevy Chase is any homeowners dream to clear your mind at the end of a busy day.

This project spanned over two years, from concept to completion, and along the way, it presented new challenges that demanded innovation at every stage. Whether it was adapting to unforeseen site conditions or integrating unique design elements, every obstacle required a fresh approach and creative problem-solving. The result is a stunning outdoor retreat that stands as a testament to perseverance, craftsmanship, and vision.
