Curb Appeal Predictions and Reflections

What new curb appeal trends do you see coming in 2025?

In 2025, we anticipate the continued rise of native planting as a dominant trend in curb appeal. This movement has gained momentum in the landscape architecture world for many compelling reasons.

One common misconception about native planting is that it limits design choices, but that couldn't be further from the truth. For example, in Maryland alone, there are over 5,000 native plant species to choose from, offering a wide range of colors, textures, and seasonal interest. While not all may be suitable for your front yard, there is an abundance of options that can complement any existing landscape condition.

The benefits of native planting extend far beyond aesthetics. Native plants support local wildlife, improve biodiversity, and create healthier ecosystems. Even a small native planting area—just a few square feet—can attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, benefiting the surrounding community. Additionally, native gardens serve as educational tools, introducing neighbors and visitors to the beauty and ecological importance of regional plants.

From an environmental perspective, native plantings offer significant advantages, particularly in terms of stormwater management and soil stability. Many native species have deep root systems, which help prevent rainwater runoff and erosion, making them a great solution for sloped landscapes. These deep roots also enhance drought tolerance, reducing the need for irrigation and making native gardens a low-maintenance alternative to traditional lawns. With less watering, fertilizing, and weeding required, native gardens are both sustainable and practical for homeowners looking to enhance curb appeal with minimal upkeep.

Are there any curb appeal trends from 2024 you see sticking around?

Yes! One of the standout trends from 2024 that we expect to continue is the addition of layered elements between the curb and the home. This includes features such as retaining walls, decorative railings, and tiered plantings, which create a dynamic and visually engaging front yard.

By introducing a mid-layer between the street and the house, homeowners can achieve a more gradual transition from public to private space. This technique enhances privacy by softening the direct sightline into the home while simultaneously highlighting the landscape design. The result is a front yard that feels more inviting, structured, and intentional—rather than just an open lawn leading straight to the house.

What landscaping trends are you most excited to try this year?

We're particularly excited about the growing popularity of pocket meadows in residential landscapes.

A pocket meadow is a small-scale, naturalized planting that mimics the look and ecological benefits of a meadow while fitting into suburban and urban spaces. These meadows typically include a mix of grasses like Carex and Muhlenbergia, along with flowering perennials such as Joe Pye Weed, Goldenrod, Turtlehead, and Coneflowers.

Pocket meadows align with the broader native planting trend but with a specific emphasis on meadow ecology, creating a vibrant, ever-changing landscape that supports pollinators and local wildlife. They are also an excellent alternative to traditional turfgrass, offering seasonal interest, resilience in changing climates, and reduced maintenance needs.

If you could only do one thing to upgrade your home’s curb appeal, what would it be and why?

If we had to choose just one improvement, it would undoubtedly be incorporating native plants into the landscape.

We know we sound like a broken record, but the ecological, aesthetic, and functional benefits of native planting are truly unmatched. Native plants not only enhance biodiversity and attract pollinators, but they also create a more resilient and sustainable landscape. By choosing plants that are naturally adapted to the local climate, homeowners can reduce water usage, minimize maintenance, and enjoy a dynamic, thriving garden year-round.

Ultimately, investing in native planting is an upgrade that benefits both homeowners and the environment, making it one of the most impactful and rewarding choices for curb appeal enhancement.
